The Los Angeles County Fire Department said it had received no warning that the train was out of control and might derail. Officials said the department learned about the situation from a 911 call.

Blackwell defended the company's actions. She said the railroad had only 30 minutes to respond and made notifications to the best of its ability.

Union Pacific plans to cut 1,000 jobsAssociated Press
OMAHA, Neb. - Union Pacific Corp. announced plans Wednesday to cut up to 1,000 jobs, or 2 percent of its work force, this year even as it reported its earnings rose 37.5 percent in the fourth quarter and beat Wall Street estimates.


Union Pacific also said it was putting remote control devices in its locomotives that will be used in rail yards. The move will eliminate the need for engineers as trains are parked and put together in the yards.

Fagih, head of the London-based Movement for Islamic Reform, said that as they left him, his assailants told him: "'Take that as a message from the Saudi government'." He described the attackers as "East London gangsters."

"The Saudi Arabians, who claim to fight terrorism, are doing terrorism themselves in the British land," Fagih told Reuters in an interview Monday from his home after returning from hospital.

London police launched an investigation but would not give more details beyond confirming the assault. "Fortunately, he was not badly hurt," a police spokesman said.

His group has used fax, Internet and radio, as well as its new Islah TV channel, to circumvent official controls on information and free speech in Saudi Arabia. He advocates peaceful political change in the kingdom.
