You're right Hammy. There was a post about the Suez Canal.

Of course, at the other end of the Red Sea, we have Djibouti and Yemen and there has been noise about them.
(I wish this fancy new board would fix my typing!) |

I guess it would help to know the general locations of aircraft carriers (particularly the Kitty Hawk) right now.

Armed escorts for ships in war on terror
LONDON - Ships passing close to rogue states or through high risk regions will be offered armed troops and military escorts, under measures to be agreed this week. The security measures are aimed at foiling terrorists, Britain's Observer newspaper reported yesterday.... Industry editor for Lloyd's List David Osler confirmed that intelligence sources had been warned that a passenger ship could be an Al-Qaeda target. 'I wouldn't bet against a cruise ship being on the hit list next year. They are relatively soft targets with lots of affluent Westerners.' http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/to...159616,00.html? Soft targets, attacks on shipping, on the travel (cruise) industry... |

Pretty sure the picture was taken at the Suez Canal. I believe that the text in the upper right corner was something about a gift for or from OBL.

That photo was of a British carrier, though, with the 3 men. It had a Harrier jump deck on the bough. The second photo they posted that was labeled in the Suez was a US carrier, but they could have gotten that at the Department of the Navy website. My husband was in the Navy so he checks out the carrier sites.

The Kitty Hawk is homeported in Yokosuka, Japan. She participated in an exercise in the waters around Japan through 11/22. She probably still is in Japan - major carrier deployments, such as the one of the Harry S Truman on 12/5, are usually reported.

I wouldn't put it past al Qaeda to try to target something in a supposedly safe port (e.g. Japan).

Did Casey translate those Red Sea threads? Maybe he still has them up... I don't know if Regis can get to our stuff from yesterday since the crash.

Well, there are two US carriers in the area and two on the way to relieve them HST and I think KH. Also a British carrier on the way.
I believe that it works out that in late Dec. or early Jan. there will be 5 carrier groups in theatre for a week or so. Unless something comes up. |

Cruise ships have been my thought for most of this year, because of the number of passengers they carry. And some of the cruise lines are still going to what I would call, dangerous areas.
Australia, Bali, Philliphines..ect. The reality is..if a cruise liner is hit by a major blast, it will leave between 2000-2500 people virtually helpless for hours. It takes a lot of time for responses to cruiseliners. This could be the single worst disaster anyone has ever seen! |
